Vitex trifolia or Pokok Lemuni Hitam, is a medicinal plant commonly found in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia. In Malay traditional medicine, it's often referred to simply as lemuni, and it has a long history of use in various home remedies and wellness practices.

Traditional & Medicinal Uses of Pokok Lemuni Hitam:

  1. Postnatal Care
    • One of the most famous uses of lemuni is in confinement food (e.g., in nasi lemuni). It is believed to help new mothers recover by improving blood circulation, aiding in uterine contraction, and restoring energy.
  2. Menstrual Regulation
    • Lemuni is traditionally used to help regulate menstrual cycles and ease symptoms of PMS (such as cramps or hormonal imbalances).
  3. Anti-inflammatory & Pain Relief
    • The leaves are often used in poultices or boiled for bath water to reduce swelling, treat joint pain (rheumatism), and soothe skin irritation.
  4. Digestive Health
    • It's sometimes taken as a tonic to relieve bloating, indigestion, or mild gastrointestinal discomfort.
  5. Antioxidant & Antimicrobial Properties
    • Studies suggest that extracts from Vitex species have antioxidant and antimicrobial effects, potentially helping in wound healing and preventing infections.
  6. Respiratory Relief

In some folk remedies, lemuni is used to treat coughs, asthma, and cold symptoms.
