Ziziphus mauritiana or Pokok Bidara is a well-known medicinal plant in traditional Malay, Islamic, and Ayurvedic medicine. In Malay and Islamic contexts, it’s often simply called daun bidara and is regarded as both spiritually and medicinally significant. 

Medicinal & Traditional Uses of Pokok Bidara:

  1. Spiritual & Protective Use (Islamic Medicine)
  • Ruqyah Practices: Bidara leaves are used in Islamic healing (ruqyah) to ward off negative spiritual disturbances, jinn possession, and sihir (black magic).
  • Spiritual Baths: Crushed leaves are added to water for mandi bidara (bidara baths), often done for spiritual cleansing or after recovering from illness.
  1. Wound Healing & Skin Conditions
  • The leaves and bark have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Traditionally used as a poultice or wash for:
    • Cuts and bruises
    • Skin infections
    • Eczema or rashes
  1. Digestive Health
  • Bidara fruits and extracts are used to aid digestion, reduce bloating, and treat constipation due to their fiber content and mild laxative effects.
  1. Anti-Diabetic Properties
  • Some studies suggest that extracts from bidara may help regulate blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity.
  1. Antioxidant & Anti-Inflammatory
  • The leaves, fruits, and bark contain flavonoids and saponins that help fight oxidative stress and inflammation in the body.
  1. Immune Booster
  • The fruit is rich in vitamin C and other nutrients that support immune function and help fight common illnesses like colds or flu.
  1. Anti-Anxiety & Sedative Effects
  • In traditional Chinese medicine, Ziziphus jujuba is used to calm the mind, reduce anxiety, and promote better sleep.
