Musa sp., or the banana plant, is more than just a source of fruit. In traditional medicine, particularly in Southeast Asia and India, various parts of the plant are utilised for their potential health benefits. The medicinal uses are often attributed to the presence of bioactive compounds like flavonoids, polyphenols, and other antioxidants found throughout the plant.

Here are some of the medicinal uses of different parts of the Pokok Pisang:

  • Fruit :
    • Digestive Health: Bananas are well-known for their benefits in treating digestive issues. The fruit is a good source of dietary fibre, which can help with both constipation and diarrhea. It's also believed to have a soothing effect on the stomach lining, making it a traditional remedy for ulcers.
    • Heart Health: Bananas are rich in potassium, which is essential for regulating blood pressure. The low sodium and high potassium content is a reason it's often recommended for people with hypertension.
    • Mood and Mental Health: The fruit contains tryptophan, an amino acid that the body converts into serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps improve mood and reduce stress.
    • Wound Healing: A paste made from a ripe banana can be applied to minor burns and wounds to provide a cooling effect and promote healing.
  • Leaves:
    • Wound and Skin Care: The leaves are traditionally used as a poultice on burns, wounds, and skin irritations. They are believed to have a cooling effect and possess astringent and antibiotic properties that can help prevent infection and aid in the healing process.
    • Fever and Inflammation: In some traditions, banana leaves are used to help reduce fever and inflammation, often by wrapping them around the affected area.
  • Flowers (Jantung Pisang):
    • Diabetes and Blood Sugar: Cooked banana flowers are traditionally given to people with diabetes to help manage blood sugar levels.
    • Women's Health: In some cultures, a decoction of the flowers is used to help enhance lactation and regulate menstrual cycles.
    • Other Uses: The flowers are also used in traditional remedies for bronchitis, dysentery, and ulcers.
  • Sap (Getah Pisang):
    • Stopping Bleeding: The astringent sap or latex from the banana plant is often applied topically to minor cuts and wounds to stop bleeding and aid in healing.
    • Skin Conditions: It's also used to treat various skin conditions like warts, insect bites, and haemorrhoids.
  • Roots and Stem (Batang Pisang):
    • Urinary and Digestive Issues: The juice from the banana stem is traditionally consumed to treat conditions like kidney stones and urinary tract infections. The roots are also used for various digestive disorders.
    • Pain Relief: The roots and stem are used in some traditional practices to help with pain, including joint pain.
