  • Other names:

    Betel palm

Areca catechu, also known as the betel palm, is a plant with a long history of use in traditional medicine across Southeast Asia and India. Its nuts, commonly referred to as areca nuts or betel nuts, have been used for various medicinal purposes, although it's crucial to note that long-term and excessive consumption is linked to significant health risks.

Here are some of the traditional medicinal uses attributed to Pokok Pinang:

  • Digestive Health: It's traditionally used to aid digestion, stimulate saliva production, and treat conditions like diarrhoea, dysentery, and intestinal worms. The nut's properties are believed to help in expelling parasites like tapeworms.
  • Oral Health: The areca nut has been used for oral hygiene. Powder from the nut is sometimes used as a dental powder to whiten teeth and remove plaque. A decoction of the nuts can be used as a gargle to treat mouth ulcers and bleeding gums.
  • Wound Care: The fine powder of areca nuts is traditionally used as a dusting powder on wounds to control bleeding and promote healing. A decoction of tender areca nuts is also used to wash chronic ulcers.
  • Inflammation and Pain: A paste made from areca nut powder and sesame oil is applied externally to treat joint pain and inflammation.
  • Other Traditional Uses:
    • Urinary and Reproductive Health: The nut's decoction has been used to treat leucorrhea (a condition of excessive vaginal discharge) and to regulate menstrual flow.
    • Nerve and Mental Health: Areca nut contains alkaloids, such as arecoline, which act as a mild stimulant on the central nervous system. It has been traditionally used to improve concentration, reduce tension, and as a treatment for conditions like schizophrenia and some effects of stroke.
    • Other ailments: It has also been used for conditions such as anaemia, cough, obesity, and as an aphrodisiac in some traditional practices.

It is crucial to consult a qualified healthcare professional before using any part of this plant for medicinal purposes. Self-medication is not recommended.
